Young researchers advised to patent their work

Karachi University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood Iraqi has urged students to do research for the betterment of society and advised them to compulsorily patent their work.

Speaking at an awareness seminar, he said that Karachi University’s Office of Research Innovation and Commercialisation (ORIC) provides full support to its students and helps them register their products too.

According to a press release received by WealthPK, the seminar was arranged by the ORIC of Karachi University and aimed at informing younger scholars and researchers about the importance of intellectual property and the copyright act to protect their research and products.

Prof Khalid Iraqi advised students that they should carry out research keeping in mind the interests of society.

He said that along with science and technology, management sciences also play an important role in protecting the products of researchers and scholars.

Additional Registrar Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) Syed Iftikhar Hasan Naqvi said that in 2012 there were 20% more companies in Karachi than in Lahore and Islamabad, but today the number of companies in Lahore and Islamabad is more than in Karachi.

He said that his institution is always ready to help people, including students. He said that SECP provides registration procedures and other information, including business agreements.

Advocate Erum Rasheed, who is associated with Vellani and Vellani, briefed the students about the benefits of product protection through patents.

Associate Manager of IP Utopia Industries Saad Ahmed Khan informed the students regarding trademarks, copyrights, and patents.
