Syngenta Pakistan Limited has successfully carried out a pilot project on weather and parametric index-based crop insurance program. The pilot project has been carried out in collaboration with Salaam Takaful Limited. Under the pilot project, farmers of the Arifwala & Vehari regions in the Punjab province were provided with payout cheques at a recently held ceremony with an average payout amount of PKR 8,500 per farmer.

Syngenta is a leading agriculture innovation and technology company which provides crop protection, biologicals, seeds, crop-enhancement products and digital services to millions of Pakistani farmers. The program of crop-insurance has been highly appreciated by the participating farmers who said that it will go a long way in providing security to the farmers against climate-induced disasters.

They said that the scheme will also help them improve their living standards while making Pakistan a food-secure country. The crop-insurance program will protect the farmers against climate change’s ravages through digital technologies. The program falls under the vision of Syngenta, ‘One Team, One Dream, Farmers’ Future,’ to empower the farmers by creating a system that addresses all of their issues.

General Manager Syngenta Pakistan, Zeeshan Hasib Baig, while speaking at the occasion said that agriculture sector of the country is being adversely affected because of the climate change problem, adding that this year there were very low yields of Wheat, Corn and Mango.

“Amidst this challenge being faced by the farmers, Syngenta Pakistan is standing alongside its farmers by providing them Weather Index Based Parametric Crop Insurance,” he said. He continued, “on one side, Syngenta is providing top quality Crop Protection products to farmers and on the other providing protection to their crops through its crop insurance partners.”

He said that the crop-insurance pilot project resulted in 50% payouts to the growers this year because of floods, droughts, heat waves and unusual weather patterns. He said that the results of the pilot project were totally in line with the vision of Syngenta to provide farmers with security against unforeseen weather events.
