Smart geyser introduced by young Pakistani engineers to save energy

A team of young electrical engineers in Pakistan has introduced a device to save energy and help consumers by reducing the consumption of natural gas in a geyser, WealthPK reports. The device can be installed in a geyser and can be operated through a mobile phone. The young engineers have labelled their invention as EzGeyser. Basically, it is a thermostat device, which can be installed in any geyser.

The young engineers, who are graduates of Air university Islamabad, National University of Science and Technology Islamabad and University of Engineering and Technology Peshawar, presented the idea of EzGeyser at a competition organised by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) under the Innovator Seed Fund (ISF) and won a grant of $35,000. Ashar Bazeb Saeed, the leader of the group, told WealthPK that EzGeyser was a smart and upgraded version of the traditional geysers that offered 30% energy efficiency and 70% savings in the bill.

He said that it was meant to improve the practice of sustainable energy. He said that they were trying to make EzGeyser an exportable item. He said that EzGeyser would have a huge market. “There are currently 10 million users of natural gas in Pakistan. Seven million of them are estimated to have a gas geyser. The product is also suitable for export and can bring billions in revenue if marketed properly,” he added. Ashar Bazeb said that EzGeyser was the first ever Internet of Things (IoT) device in Pakistan.

It has a mobile application and can be operated from anywhere. “EzGeyser is meant to address the issue of unsafe use of natural gas. It comes with a smart thermostat, equipped with a self-ignition feature powered by a battery. This feature enables the geyser to be readily available for use in case of an unexpected or odd-hour spell of load shedding,” he said. Ashar Bazeb said that prior to it, no geyser was introduced in the market to have IoT features.

“There is a fixed timer device in the conventional geyser, which has been used for many years. EzGeyser application has more features to operate the geyser schedule,” he added. He said that one could give different schedules for working days and for weekends to one’s geyser by using the device. “It is a self-ignition system, which also alerts people about errors, temperature control and reporting,” he added. The young electrical engineer thanked HEC and ISF for supporting the idea. He said the fund of $35,000 was essential to improve the product. He added that they still needed to work on the product.

Ashar Bazeb said that they wanted to launch a research and development (R&D) laboratory to work on sustainable energy and product development. “EzGeyser is meant to address the issue of the quick depletion of natural gas resources in Pakistan, as we consume billions of cubic feet of natural gas every winter to keep our houses warm. This way of life is not sustainable as we will soon run out of natural gas. We need some innovative product that can at least slow down its impact,” he told WealthPK.
