Railways to enhance freight operations as 70 coaches arrive from China

Pakistan Railways is all set to enhance its freight services with the assistance of China as the third batch of 70 cargo coaches from China have arrived at Karachi Port.With the arrival of new cargo coaches, Pakistan Railways is going to enhance the capacity of different freight trains with the resumption of freight service from Peshawar to Karachi, said a senior official. Under the agreement between Pakistan and China, Pakistan will import a total of 230 cargo coaches.

Pakistan Railways Divisional Superintendent Muhammad Nasir Khalily said while talking to WealthPK that the Railways is all set to install these new cargo coaches in different freight vehicles, which will enhance and improve the freight operations and efficiency. Nasir said the Pakistan Railways is going to restore freight train operations from Peshawar to Karachi to facilitate the traders and business community through effective freight service on this mainline. He said that railways all over the world is considered as the most effective and easiest service and one of the fastest means of transportation.

The official underscored that with the arrival of new cargo coaches, freight service from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to other cities of the country will become more accessible and cost-effective. Khawaja Saad Rafique, Minister for Railways, said in a recent statement that the country’s freight trains are being upgraded and will soon run from Karachi to Peshawar, providing faster and more efficient transportation of goods.

Nasir said Chinese assistance is imperative in upgrading Pakistan Railways’ infrastructure. He said the new cargo and passenger coaches and engines will prove significant towards modernising Pakistan Railway’s system and transportation infrastructure. Pakistan and China’s CRRC Tangshan Locomotive & Rolling Stock Company inked an agreement in November 2021 for the supply of 230 high-speed coaches to Pakistan Railways with an objective to upgrade and modernise its infrastructure.
