Punjab govt planning to start construction of Surra Dam

ISLAMABAD, Jul 26: The Punjab government is planning to start construction of Surra Dam in Taunsa Tehsil of District Dera Ghazi Khan as a pilot project to conserve rainwater that does down the drain during the rainy season.

A senior official of Punjab government told WealthPK that authorities have been directed to complete feasibility study of the Surra Dam at the earliest. The Surra Dam is proposed near Sanghar town of Dera Ghazi Khan district and prime objective of the dam is to store hill-torrents water in the district which will be used for agriculture and irrigation purposes. The first-of-its-kind rainwater harvesting project will also address the water scarcity and irrigation issues of the area as the dam has the potential to store a large quantity of water.

The official said Surra Dam will provide water to people of Taunsa in abundant quantity, besides ensuring development of agriculture sector. The project will prove to be a game-changer for the area, he said. “The torrential floods and abrupt rain spells are major concerns in the area during monsoon. The dam will be constructed to store the hill-torrents water,” he said, adding that the project will also generate jobs for the local people to earn their livelihood. He said the dam construction will also promote tourism in the area.
