PIDE to initiate joint research for policy formulation on economy

February 13, 2023

The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) will collaborate on research projects with the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry in order to create diverse economic policy papers. Vice Chancellor, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) Dr Nadeem ul Haq paid a visit to the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI) with Pro-Vice Chancellor Durr-e-Nayab and his research team. They spoke about ways to work with ICCI to conduct cooperative research projects and create various economic policy publications.

Dr. Nadeem informed the attendees about the research projects of PIDE and shared several publications with ICCI that were based on research. He consented that PIDE would work with ICCI on several initiatives, such as creating budget ideas for the ensuing budget and a policy paper on tax changes, a charter of the economy, and a state of the commerce report.

He emphasised that to enhance Pakistan's economy, the business sector should endeavour to turn small and medium-sized businesses into international corporations. He underlined the need for stakeholders to have open dialogues about the economy in order to develop stronger business and economic policies.

President of the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry Ahsan Zafar Bakhtawari, spoke at the event and emphasised the difficulties experienced by company owners when establishing and growing their enterprises. He said that there are about 122 regulatory entities that enterprises must deal with. He also claimed that the cumbersome trade and commerce rules are distorting the markets and increasing the cost of doing business.

He asked the government to lessen the regulatory burden and expedite the completion of the Pakistan Single Window project so that all regulatory services could be obtained in one location, assisting businesses in growing and contributing more effectively to the country's economic growth.

He praised PIDE's desire to collaborate with ICCI on a number of issues of shared interest and expressed his confidence that the results of their combined efforts would be positive for the economy and companies. Vice President of the ICCI and engineer Muhammad Azhar ul Islam Zafar pleaded with the government to treat businesspeople with respect and engage the private sector before implementing major policies.
