Pakistan, Sri Lanka agree to deepen economic relations

Pakistan and Sri Lanka have agreed to deepen economic, cultural and bilateral relations between the two countries for mutual benefit. The agreement was reached in principle in a meeting between the Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar and his Sri Lankan counterpart Shehan Semasinghe. Sri Lankan Finance Minister was also accompanied by the Deputy Secretary to the treasury Priyantha Rathnayaka, when they called on Ishaq Dar, here in Islamabad. Ishaq Dar welcomed the delegation to Pakistan and expressed hope that both countries will learn from each other’s experiences in managing difficult economies.

He told the visiting dignitaries about the ongoing relief efforts of the government to help the people affected by the floods. He shared with them the plan for reconstruction and rehabilitation of the flood-affected people and regions. The Sri Lankan Finance Minister told Ishaq Dar about the steps he had taken to rescue the economy of Sri Lanka from going into further dissolution. Ishaq Dar appreciated his counterpart’s constructive role in bringing the Sri Lankan economy around.

Shehan Semasinghe also congratulated Ishaq Dar on the efficiency of the streamlined digital cash transfer system and social safety net in the form of BISP in Pakistan. Ishaq Dar offered technical assistance to his counterpart to help him revive the Sri Lankan economy, for which Shehan Semasinghe expressed his deepest gratitude. Ishaq Dar was accompanied by the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Revenue, Tariq Bajwa during the meeting.
