Pakistan Launched GIS Portal to Monitor CPEC Projects

January 19, 2022

ISLAMABAD, Jan 19 (INP-WealthPK) The Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, has launched a web portal and a mobile app to monitor the progress of PSDP and CPEC projects. SUPARCO developed a web-based geographic information system (GIS) portal to track development projects and successfully showed it to the Planning Commission. The launching ceremony of the web portal and mobile app was held at the Pakistan Planning and Management Institute, Islamabad. Federal Minister for Planning and Special Initiatives Asad Umar was the guest of honour. Secretary of Planning Abdul Aziz Uqaili, Chairman SUPARCO Maj Gen Amer Nadeem, senior officers of the Planning Ministry and stakeholders from the public and private sectors attended the launching ceremony. Asad Umar congratulated the SUPARCO team and highlighted the importance and role of the organisation in planning, monitoring, and execution of development projects. He said satellite technology improves communication and helps diagnose potential problems, enabling timely decisions. He added that satellite systems could be used to monitor the quantitative and qualitative conditions of projects and how well they could be integrated with the project management. Maj Gen Amer Nadeem emphasised the importance of Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite 1, claiming that it had helped the country become self-reliant in tackling a variety of socio-economic development and monitoring concerns. The Planning Commission's ineffective Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system always resulted in delays and inefficiency in the implementation of PSDP projects, resulting in massive overruns, cost increases, and a waste of taxpayer money. That's why the whole monitoring and assessment process has to be revamped. SUPARCO has modernised the M&E system using GIS technology. Moreover, data collection with geo-tagged real-time information and pictures, as well as online and offline data transfer systems, are among the solutions created. Using this technology, SUPARCO provides the first complete understanding of a real-time project and makes it simple to view the ground development of projects every four days. At the ceremony, technical experts answered various questions raised by the audience regarding the efficient project monitoring capability.
