Pakistan Eyes 20% Share in Jordanian Meat Market

February 08, 2022

By Raza Khan ISLAMABAD Feb. 08 (INP-WealthPK): Pakistan eyes at least 20% share of the Jordanian meat market in the coming years as the country’s exporters start delivering meat consignments to Amman. Kosar Abbas Zaidi, Director General of agriculture products and services, the Ministry of Commerce, expressed the hope that more Pakistani exporters will be able to obtain meat export permits for Jordan. “Jordanian meat market is full of potential for Pakistani meat exporters,” he told WealthPK, adding that Jordan had imported meat worth $338 million in 2020 from various countries. “It is expected that Pakistan will get $65 million to $75 million market share in the Jordanian meat market,” Zaidi said. He said Jordan had approved three Pakistani meat processing companies in October last year, including Tata Best Foods Limited, Organic Meat Limited Company, and Tazij Meat and Food, for exporting bovine, sheep, goat and camel meat to Jordan. Zaidi informed WealthPK that Pakistan is also looking to grab the Chinese meat market as China is the largest meat importer in the world. “China can be the largest market for Pakistani meat and meat products if it allows imports from Pakistan,” he said. Tata Best Foods Limited is the first-ever Pakistani company to start exporting meat and meat products to Jordan after getting certification from the Jordanian authorities. Bilal Shahid Tata, the firm’s chief executive officer, told WealthPK that his company has started delivering beef and meat of lamb to Jordan. He hopes that meat exports to Jordan will increase gradually because there are no quota restrictions. “We hope to export meat worth $50 million to Jordan in the next fiscal year as we work to develop this market,” he added. Tata is of the view that the Jordanian meat market possesses great potential for Pakistani meat exporters. “Jordan imports meant products worth around $400 million annually,” Tata said. He hopes the Pakistani exporters will get a substantial share of Jordanian total meat imports in the coming months and years. “We will try to capitalise on this market,” he said. Meanwhile, Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood also shared the news of Pakistan delivering the first-ever meat consignment to Jordan on his official Twitter account. “We congratulate Tata Foods on exporting Pakistan's first-ever consignment of meat to Jordan,” the adviser said, adding promotion and facilitation of non-traditional products to new markets constitutes the ministry of commerce’s diversification policy. Dawood also urged other exporters to aggressively market their products in Jordan and other new markets. It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan has set $750 million export target of meat and meat preparations for the fiscal year 2024-25. The target of meat exports for the current fiscal year is $435 million. Statistics from the ministry of commerce show that exports of meat and meat preparations recorded $338 million in 2020-21, registering a growth of 11% compared with the preceding year. Meat exports were worth $305 million in 2019-20. Recently, Egypt allowed 10 Pakistani meat processing companies for exports. The development came after an audit conducted by the Egyptian veterinary authorities. According to the ministry of commerce, Malaysia has also granted market access to the Pakistani meat exporters and the final approval is under process.
