Federal Minister for Communications Maulana Asad Mehmood has directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to collaborate with the provincial and local governments and ensure the early rehabilitation of all highways and motorways in the flood-affected areas. The minister visited Karachi with Federal Secretary and Chairman of the NHA and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (F) Karachi Provincial Leader Allama Rashid Mehmood Soomro to review the flood-affected road infrastructure of the NHA in Sindh.
On the occasion, they were briefed about the latest situation of Indus Highway, Mehran Highway and National Highway by Secretary for Communications Captain (R) Muhammad Khurram Agha and Member of South Zone Ahmed Memon, said a press release received by WealthPK. The minister would visit various areas and cities in Sindh to review the flood-affected roads and highways to ensure their earliest restoration. They were informed that the Indus Highway was still affected by the floods and up to 11 feet of stagnant water was standing on the Sehwan-Mehar Highway.
Moreover, heavy traffic could not pass through the Mehran Highway due to the single track. The light traffic also moved slowly due to the presence of flood water on the Mehran Highway. Therefore, the traffic load of the Indus Highway has been shifted to the National Highway, where there are already potholes due to floods. Due to traffic load and potholes, the restoration work of the highway is facing difficulties, but the NHA staff is working round the clock to restore the national and other highways. The Federal Minister for Communications will also meet the Sindh Chief Minister so that the construction work of the motorway could be done in collaboration with the provincial government.
