Syed Muhammad Ghaznavi ISLAMABAD, March 23 (INP-WealthPK): The government has launched the Ehsaas Amdan (income) programme to help women and youth generate their own sources of income in the 10 least developed districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These districts include Upper Kohistan, Lower Kohsitan, North Waziristan, South Waziristan, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Kolai-Palas, Torghar, Battagram and Shangla. The beneficiaries will be identified through the National Socioeconomic Registry Survey. Implementation of the first phase of the Amdan programme is expected to be completed by 2023. During this phase, livestock will be distributed among the beneficiaries along with interest-free loans and scholarships. 30% of the beneficiaries of this programme will be women and 60% youth. As per the Economic Survey 2020-21 published by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Special Initiatives, women literacy rate in KP’s rural areas is 34%. The government’s initiative will help these women become contributing members of their families. Meanwhile, the government will give Rs20,000 to each internally displaced family on their return to Tirah valley of Khyber tribal district. Over 15,650 families will benefit from this one-time emergency cash payment as they make their way back home. The cash amount will help internally displaced persons (IDPs) resettle in their homeland. It is to mention here that earlier this month, Dr Sania Nishtar, the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, personally welcomed a group of the families on their return to Tirah valley. Thousands of families were displaced from the picturesque valley during the war on terror. Besides, the Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety Division has set up registration desks in the area to register the IDPs with the Ehsaas database so that they can get quarterly cash payments which will help them revive their mostly agrarian economy. Dr Amin, a faculty member of the University of Peshawar, commenting on the plight of the returning families, told WealthPK, “The Rs20,000 cash will make quite a difference to a returning IDP family.”
