July 20, 2022

ISLAMABAD, Jul 18 (INP-WealthPK): The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) would be operational by September 2023 both for local and international flights.

According to official documents, the airport will have the most modern infrastructure, which is being built with a huge amount of $246m at an area of 4,300 acres. The airport is owned by a tripartite venture between China, Pakistan and Oman and managed and operated by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). The development of the new airport is part of the gigantic China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, which is a cornerstone of the Belt and Road Initiative.

The project was initiated as an early-harvest high-priority project of the CPEC program in 2014. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project in January 2015 while it was funded through a grant agreement signed between China and Pakistan in May 2017.

Currently, the construction work at the airport is in different stages. The construction of the passenger terminal building will be completed by June 2023, work related to air traffic control by March 2023, while the overall construction of the airport will finish before September 2023. As the biggest airport in Pakistan, it will also become the nation’s second airport capable of handling A380 aircraft.
