Gram farmers urged to use certified varieties of seed

September 13, 2022

Seeds of approved and certified varieties can help enhance per acre yield of gram, according to agriculturists.

Experts have advised farmers to use seeds of approved varieties only so as to get maximum production of gram with the lowest input. The approved varieties, they said, have sufficient disease resistance and can give better production even in harsh weather conditions.

A spokesman for the department said the time from mid-September to end of November is suitable for gram cultivation in Punjab and the growers should cultivate this crop as early as possible. Late sowing, he said, will hamper the production and damage quality of the grains.

He said the seeds of approved and certified varieties can be helpful in enhancing yield. Farmers of Attock, Chakwal and other districts of North Punjab should cultivate gram crop from Sept 20 to Oct 15, whereas growers of Gujrat, Jhelum, Rawalpindi and Narowal should sow it from Oct 15 to Nov 10.

Similarly, he said, the farmers of Bhakkar, Jhang, Khushab, Mianwali and Layyah districts should cultivate this crop from Oct 1 to 30. For gram cultivation in Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and other districts of Central Punjab, he said, a period from Oct 15 to Nov 15 is appropriate.
