National Highway Authority (NHA) plays a crucial role in enhancing intercity trade and road connectivity as well as creating opportunities for tourism through its road infrastructure projects, said Director of Public Relations NHA Sohail Aftab while talking to WealthPK. ‘’NHA has played a vital role in accelerating socioeconomic development through reliable and sustainable road infrastructure, which will increase inter-city trade and tourism in our country,” he said. “The growth of the tourism sector creates employment opportunities, stimulates local industries, and contributes to the overall national development,” he said.

“NHA currently manages a network of 48 national highways, motorways, and strategic roads spanning a total length of 14,480km. In the development budget for the Fiscal Year 2023-2024, NHA had a portfolio of 115 projects with a budget allocation of Rs118.403 billion,” he said. “One significant initiative contributing to these goals is the CPEC, which includes various road infrastructure projects. These projects, such as Zhob to Kuchlak road (298 km), Khuzdar-Basima road (110 km), Nokundi-Mashkel road (103 km), and Hoshab-Awaran M8 road (146 km), are nearing completion,” Sohail said.

Balochistan has a strategic location that can contribute significantly to the socio-economic growth of the country. It is connected to Iran at Tehran and Afghanistan at Chaman, making it a crucial transit route for trade and business between these countries. “These projects will play a significant role in connecting Balochistan with Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK), and Sindh and not only facilitate the transportation of fruits and other tradeable goods but also promote tourism in Balochistan,” Sohail added.

“Moreover, Balochistan offers a sizable market for trade and business. The province is rich in natural resources, including gas, coal, copper, and gold, offering opportunities for industries such as mining, energy, and manufacturing. With the right infrastructure and support, these industries can flourish and contribute to the socio-economic development of the province and Pakistan as a whole,” said the NHA director of public relations.

He said the NHA had made it easier for tourists to travel and explore various regions, promoting domestic and international tourism.“Takht-e-Suleman, also known as the Throne of Suleman, is an ancient archaeological site located in the Zhob District. It holds historical significance and attracts both history enthusiasts and tourists. Many more such places will be key to tourism,” he said. “Through this massive share in the budget, NHA will not only enhance and expand the road network infrastructure to improve connectivity but also promote economic growth, and ensure safe and efficient transportation across Pakistan,” he added.
