Germany Willing to Make €400m Investment in Different Sectors

By Omer Bilal ISLAMABAD, Feb. 23 (INP-WealthPK): A group of investors from Germany will visit Pakistan this summer to explore the investment opportunities available in the country. A Board of Investment (BOI) official informed WealthPK that Germany was willing to bring an investment of over €400 million in logistics, automobile, food processing and pharmaceutical sectors under the flagship China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project. He added that a delegation of German Federal Chamber of Commerce and Industries will participate in the Global Investment Summit organised by BOI. He said a group of Pakistani investors dealing in electronics, aerospace, industrial plants, consultancy, retail, information technology, fintech, dairy, energy, finance, technology, education, healthcare, renewable energy, trade and social sectors will also participate in the summit. Meanwhile, a BOI spokesperson informed WealthPK that Bernhard Schlagheck, the German Ambassador to Pakistan, visited the BOI and met with the Board’s Chairman Azfar Ahsan and secretary Fareena Mazhar. “The BOI chairman and secretary briefed Mr Schlagheck about the incentives being extended to investors, especially the tax exemptions in the Special Economic Zones (SEZs).” Earlier, he said the two countries had signed a €129-million agreement to increase their current trade portfolio. “Under the agreement, funds have been allocated to different projects, including digital governance, social protection, promotion of startups, health sector, and development of hydropower and renewable energy sources.” The BOI spokesperson said Germany is a major trade partner of Pakistan and has engaged in development cooperation since 1961, with trade volume between the two countries reaching $3.34 billion. Pakistan exported goods worth $2.13 billion to Germany and imported goods worth $1.21 billion in 2021. Over $1.8 billion of Pakistani exports to Germany include clothes and related items. A major part of German exports to Pakistan comprises machinery, chemicals, and pharmaceutical products. The German economy is the largest in the European Union and runs a trade surplus with most trade partners. (Source-BOI) Over 30 German companies are present in the Pakistani market and some of the well-known are BASF (chemicals), Daimler AG (automotive), DHL (courier), Lufthansa Cargo (cargo airline), Merck Group (pharmaceutical), Metro Cash and Carry (wholesale), and Siemens (conglomerate). Additionally, the German development organisation GIZ has funded several development projects in various sectors.
