With increasing electricity costs and environmental concerns, the manufacturing of energy-efficient appliances is booming in Pakistan. “With a growing demand for energy-efficient appliances, manufacturers in Pakistan are making significant strides by incorporating energy-saving features into their products,” said Sarmad Mehmood, Assistant Manager of Research and Development at PEL, a leading manufacturer of electric appliances, while talking to WealthPK.

He said energy-efficient appliances are designed to consume less energy while performing the same task as conventional appliances. Such products include refrigerators, air conditioners, washing machines, deep freezers, water dispensers, microwave ovens and lighting devices. Sarmad said the shift to energy efficient motors will have a positive impact on industry and save domestic electricity consumption as well.

“This is not only beneficial for the environment but also helpful at the consumer end as it also helps consumers reduce their electricity bill,” he said. Fiza Khalid, HR Business Associates at PEL, told WealthPK that energy efficiency has become a crucial concern during the recent years, and it has become even more relevant in the context of Pakistan’s appliance manufacturing industry.

“Energy-efficient appliances require less power, thus saving resources and costs. PEL company is producing a vast range of energy efficient appliances and although they cost 20% more than the conventional appliances, they are still preferred by consumers,” she added. There are newer and energy-efficient substitutes of electronic appliances in the market such as DC refrigerators, DC inverter air conditioners, and other appliances that are worthy of investment and can reduce overall domestic consumption, and save the amount spent on monthly energy bills.

Fiza said that in a country like Pakistan where energy consumption is continuously growing due to the rapidly expanding population, the government is also advocating the use of energy- efficient appliances that can save domestic electricity consumption. “Following the global energy efficiency and conservation efforts, Pakistan’s government has also initiated energy efficiency and conservation measures. These initiatives include minimum efficiency performance standards and energy efficiency labels for electrical appliances,” she mentioned.

A new research suggests that Pakistan’s households waste 25% of electricity due to inefficient appliances. As per statistics, domestic sector consumes 42.15% of total electricity produced in Pakistan. The Power Division and National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (NEECA) are working on a plan to introduce Pakistani-made electrical appliance performance criterion. Under the plan, only the manufacturing of appliances with energy efficiency of more than 90% will be allowed.
