CPEC projects to be expedited by PM's China visit

November 09, 2022

The recent significant visit to China by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will speed up the construction of the Gwadar deep seaport and other sizable infrastructure projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), which would ultimately benefit Pakistan's struggling economy.

This was stated by Coordinator to Federal Tax Ombudsman Meher Kashif Younis while addressing a seminar on “Pak-China Relations” organised by the Gold Ring Economic Forum, a think tank on the economy.

According to Meher, during the visit, China and Pakistan decided to go on with a number of significant infrastructure projects under the CPEC, including accelerating the development of the deep seaport of Gwadar.

He said that China has reiterated its commitment to advancing the CPEC and that it will work to further strengthen synergy between its development objectives and those of Pakistan in order to help Pakistan stabilise its financial situation.

According to him, both China and Pakistan made it clear that the CPEC is an open and inclusive platform where interested third parties can profit from investment opportunities in high-priority sectors like industry, agriculture, information technology, science and technology, as well as oil and gas.

He said that China and Pakistan will be better equipped to weather the current challenges by cementing their practical bilateral cooperation. He asserted that no nation has ever offered Pakistan or other developing nations assistance with the same earnestness as China.

He said that China has most recently helped Pakistan in an emergency after the nation experienced catastrophic flooding and that it will continue to fully support Pakistan's strategy for the rehabilitation of the afflicted areas.
