Biggest contempt is insulting public mandate: Talal Chaudhry

September 13, 2017

ISLAMABAD, Sept 13 (INP): Senior PML-N leader Talal Chaudhry said on Wednesday that insulting the public mandate was the biggest contempt. Addressing media personnel outside the apex court, Talal Chaudhry said that if a terrorist was entitled to an appeal if a decision went against him then why doesn't an elected prime minister have the same right? "A mistake should be corrected--further errors should not be made in response to it," he said. Talal Chaudhry said that if the judges of the apex court could be restored due to a long march then why couldn't Nawaz Sharif's appeal be reviewed? "We are not guilty of contempt of court, we are only appealing," he said. "Those who violated the law should also be tried rather than only those who made it," he added. Talal Chaudhry said that contrary to an opinion that was being promoted, PML-N was not being stubborn. "Rather, this issue pertains to the future of our country," he said. A five-member Larger Bench of Supreme Court is hearing review petitions of ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his children against August 28 decision of the apex court in Panama Papers Case. The larger bench is headed by Justice Asif Saeed Khosa and also comprises of Justice Ejaz Afzal Khan, Justice Gulzar Ahmad, Justice Azmat Saeed and Justice Ejaz ul Ahsan. Last month, Nawaz Sharif filed three separate petitions in Supreme Court to review and stay further implementation of the Panamagate verdict that resulted in his disqualification. The petitions, submitted by Nawaz Sharif’s lawyer Khawaja Harris, also carried relevant documents concerning the iqama — a United Arab Emirates work visa — that led the judges to declare Nawaz “unfit to hold office”.
