Asia-Pacific Coronavirus News: India's COVID-19 death toll rises to 2,752, Vietnam reports no local transmission for 30 days

HONG KONG, May 16 (Xinhua) -- The following are the latest developments of the COVID-19 pandemic in Asia-Pacific countries:

NEW DELHI -- India's federal health ministry Saturday morning said 103 new deaths due to COVID-19, besides fresh 3,970 positive cases were reported since Friday in the country, taking the number of deaths to 2,752 and total cases to 85,940.

According to ministry officials, so far 30,153 people have been discharged from hospitals after showing improvement.

HANOI -- Vietnam on Saturday morning confirmed a new case of COVID-19 infection, bringing the total in the country to 314 with no deaths reported.

The new case is a Vietnamese woman aged 62 who returned to the country from Russia on Wednesday, Vietnam News Agency cited the country's National Steering Committee on COVID-19 Prevention and Control as reporting.

Vietnam has recorded no local transmission for 30 straight days, the news agency reported.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported no new case of COVID-19 on Saturday, said a statement of the Ministry of Health, as the country is bracing the first weekend under COVID-19 Alert Level two.

This means New Zealand's combined total of confirmed and probable cases stayed at 1,498, of which 1,148 are confirmed, it said.

The total number of tests completed to date is 223,937, an increase of 7,150.

KATHMANDU -- With confirmation of 18 new cases on Friday, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Nepal reached 267, Nepal's Ministry of Health and Population said.

The ministry had confirmed nine new cases in the morning and additional nine cases were confirmed in the evening. Among them, three are children aged between 7-10 years.

The Himalayan country has been witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases in recent days with the number of cases nearly tripling in just one week.

As the number of COVID-19 cases is rising, the Nepali government has tightened its screw on movement of people from one place to another.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 793 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 26,891.

Of the newly confirmed cases, one was a case in the community, one was a work permit holder residing outside dormitories, and 791 were work permit holders residing in dormitories. There were no imported cases.

There are currently 1,124 confirmed cases who are still in hospital. Of these, most are stable or improving, and 18 are in critical condition in the intensive care unit. Altogether 21 have passed away from complications due to COVID-19 infection.
