Agricultural practices need to be upgraded in view of changing climate to avoid water-logging and soil erosion, said Federal Minister for Commerce and Investment Syed Naveed Qamar while speaking at the panel discussion with the theme of “Living Indus”. The discussion was also attended by the Minister for Climate Change, Senator Sherry Rehman, held in Sharm El-Sheikh during the ongoing 27th Conference of Parties (COP-27) on climate change.

The minister said, “we need to upgrade the knowledge and skill-set of farmers to make them aware of the climate threat. We also need to allocate more resources to finance modern technologies for the farmers so that they can acquire modern technical equipment.” He added, “it is only in this way that we will be able to evolve a culture of sustainable agriculture.” According to a press statement, the minister also shared his experiences in the wake of 2010 floods and the subsequent relief efforts carried out by the government.

The minister continued that the “urbanization of regions prone to flooding has resulted in the vulnerability of large sections of the population and this is the reason why the 2022 floods in Pakistan were more devastating.” The press statement concluded by stating that the minister shared his personal experiences during the 2022 flooding and highlighted the valuable lessons learnt for the knowledge of the audience.
