The Asian Development Bank will provide a relief package to the flood-affected people in Pakistan besides helping in the repair of the damaged infrastructure. In a tweet, the ADB said that the package was designed to fulfil the immediate needs of flood victims on short and long-term bases. The package will include the provision of livelihoods to the flood survivors and repair of the damaged infrastructure in the affected areas of Pakistan. The bank will use ongoing projects to repair the damaged infrastructure, including roads and irrigation channels. It will support the development and financial stability of the agriculture sector to boost food security.
The ADB now also offers countercyclical support to help the poor and vulnerable, especially women and children. On a long-term basis, the bank will prioritise projects that support post-flood reconstruction and strengthen climate and disaster resilience. Additionally, the ADB has already approved $3 million for the immediate purchase of food, tents and other relief goods for the flood victims in Pakistan. The bank will provide more details of its assistance package when it is finalised.
The ADB will work closely with the government and other international agencies to rebuild the lives and livelihoods of more than 33 million people affected by the devastating floods. “The scale and impact of the floods are shocking. ADB stands with the people of Pakistan through these difficult times,” said ADB Director General of Central and West Asia Yevgeniy Zhuko in his message available with WealthPK.
