The approval of 13 renewable energy projects marks a momentous milestone as these projects, spanning a range of clean energy technologies, hold the power to transform Pakistan’s energy landscape and contribute to a greener and more resilient future. Senior solar and wind energy developer Mustafa Abdullah said while talking to WealthPK that approval of these renewable energy projects demonstrates a commitment to meeting ambitious climate goals. “By embracing clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydro, Pakistan can gradually shift from fossil fuels, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change,” said Abdullah, who is currently serving as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Moro Power Company.

“The 13 projects worth $600 million has a total capacity of 650 megawatts.  Their approval presents an opportunity to expedite transition to a renewable economy. As these projects will help generate clean energy, jobs will be created in manufacturing, construction, operation, and maintenance, helping to revive local economies and foster sustainable development,” he said. These projects have been developed under the RE Policy 2006 and approved by National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC) and National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). Recently, the federal government has given the final green signal for implementation of these projects. Abdullah was of the view that these projects represent a key step towards diversifying Pakistan’s energy sources.

“Relying on a single energy source can be risky. By approving a variety of renewable energy projects, we can enable a more resilient and decentralised energy infrastructure, ensuring a constant energy supply without overburdening any single technology,” he explained. He said renewable energy projects have the potential to empower local communities by decentralising energy generation. “By investing in small-scale projects and supporting local energy cooperatives, we can improve energy access in remote areas, reduce energy poverty, and enhance energy security for all,” he said. Abdullah said the approval of these projects is expected to drive further breakthroughs in renewable energy technologies as demand for clean energy grows, so does the need for research and innovation.

The ripple effects of these approved projects extend far beyond clean energy generation. Sustainable Development Goals such as reducing poverty, improving health, and providing education can be supported by harnessing the potential of renewable energy. Moreover, the presence of green infrastructure can attract sustainable investments and promote economic growth. Experts believe that these energy projects under the current energy crisis and prevailing economic conditions will help recover electricity shortfall on a fast-track basis by adding a cheaper source of electricity for end consumers.
